Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA)

VIA is a safe, affordable, and effective method for detecting cervical cancer early. It uses a simple solution to highlight abnormal cells that may become cancerous, making it especially valuable in resource-limited settings.

What is VIA?

Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) is a cervical cancer screening technique where a dilute solution of acetic acid (similar to vinegar) is applied to the cervix. If abnormal or precancerous cells are present, they temporarily turn white and can be seen through a speculum during a pelvic exam.

Who should be screened

VIA is recommended for women aged 25 to 49, particularly in regions where access to more advanced tests may be limited. It is part of the broader cervical cancer screening guidelines for women aged 21–65, who should undergo screening every 3 years.

How VIA Fits Into Cancer Screening

  • Breast Cancer: Self-breast exams from the 20s, ultrasound for women under 40 with dense breast tissue, and mammograms every 1–2 years starting at age 40.

  • Cervical Cancer: VIA for women 25–49, and Pap smears every 3 years for women 25–65.

  • Prostate Cancer: Men should discuss screening options with their doctor at age 50, including PSA blood tests, digital rectal exams, and biopsies if needed.

  • Colorectal Cancer: Screening begins at age 45 with stool tests, stool DNA tests, colonoscopy every 10 years, or sigmoidoscopy every 5 years.

Why VIA Matters

Cervical cancer is preventable and treatable when caught early. VIA is:

  • Low-cost and accessible for communities with limited resources.

  • Quick and safe, often providing results during the same clinic visit.

  • Effective at detecting early cell changes, allowing for timely treatment.
